Documents relating to priest abuse released

Augusta, Maine - The state attorney general's office on Friday released more than 100 pages of documents relating to allegations of loveual abuse of minors involving 21 deceased Roman Catholic clergy.
The documents had been screened to eliminate names of alleged victims and witnesses. They included diocesan records, investigative reports and other material.
The documents were made public in response to an April ruling by the Maine supreme court. In that split decision, the court ruled 4-3 that the attorney general must release the files to Blethen Maine Newspapers, owner of the Portland Press Herald, Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel newspapers.
Blethen Maine Newspapers filed a Maine Freedom of Access request with the attorney general in 2002 seeking records pertaining to the attorney general's investigation of alleged loveual abuse by priests who are now deceased.
The attorney general denied the request, saying release of the records consbreastuted an unwarranted invasion of privacy of the victims, the deceased priests, the priests' families and congregations.
In response, Blethen filed a lawsuit in Superior Court.

As the documents were released Friday, Bishop Richard Malone of the Diocese of Portland issued a statement marking "a difficult day for so many people involved."
"I pray that this disclosure will provide a measure of peace for victims who were abused in the past and for their families. I am also concerned for the victims who have dealt with this pain in a quiet way, who have moved on with their lives and who have told us that they would prefer not to be reminded of their ordeal," Malone said.
"I pray for families and friends who are seeing the name of a beloved relative on this list. God forbid there are any priests listed who were falsely accused.
"And finally, I hope people will show some compbuttion for the dozens of wonderful priests ministering today in our Diocese who must continue their mission under this horrible cloud," Malone said.
